JAMB Denies Introducing New Admission Policy, Read New Development

41_JAMB-LogoThe Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, has distanced itself from media reports that it imposed the Point System Option (PSO) on higher institutions as the new admission guidelines for 2016 admission processes.

Distancing itself from such report, the examination body described it as a figment of the imagination of its proponents.

Speaking with Saturday Telegraph , the Head of JAMB’s Media and Information Unit, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, said the examination body at no point made such a recommendation.

He noted that a section of the media had only scooped the information from a presentation to some education stakeholders by the JAMB Registrar, Prof. Dibu Ojerinde, which was posted on the examination body’s website.

This is even as he added that as against the report, JAMB would no longer issue any admission letter to any candidate but would ensure that the three admission pillars of Merit, Catchment Area and the Education Disadvantaged Areas must be observed by all the higher institutions across the country.

He said:-

“It is irresponsible for any media to have credited any information that did not emanate from JAMB to us. JAMB did not create any new admission guidelines. Some people just went to our website to pick a document which was presented to a session of stakeholders comparing various admission systems by different institutions.

“No university or polytechnic is instructed by JAMB to adopt such a policy. In fact, we won’t issue admission letter any longer as the Minister has mandated us.

“What we are to do is to provide admission list and album to the institutions and ensure that the 45 per cent for merit; 35 per cent for catchment area and the 20 per cent for education disadvantaged areas, are observed to the letter. The universities are to issue admission letters individually.”

Jamb Announces New System for 2016 Admission, ..adopts Point System!

jamb-2The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has announced the release of its guidelines for the 2016 admissions’ process.

The method, described as the point system option, was adopted after an extensive one-week meeting JAMB had with universities and other tertiary institutions’ administrators in the country.

According to the guidelines contained in a statement placed on its website on Monday night, JAMB said that the modalities were going to be based on point system.

While explaining how the admission process would work for Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination candidates and direct entry students, the organisation stated that universities were going to charge fees for screening of candidates at the end of the process for admission.

According to JAMB, the new method uses a point system to offer provisional admission to candidates.

“Before a candidate can be considered for screening, he/she must have been offered a provisional admission by JAMB. The JAMB admission checker portal is going to be opened soon for this process, so praying is all you can do now,” JAMB said.

The second process, it said, was the point system where admission would depend on the point tally of the candidate.

The statement said, “JAMB’s provisional admission no longer makes much sense this year, your points tally will decide your faith. The points are evenly spread out between your O’ Level and JAMB results to provide a level-playing field for all.

“In the first case, any candidate who submits only one result which contains his/her relevant subjects already has 10 points. The exam could be NECO, WASSCE, November/December WASSCE etc, but any candidate who has two sittings only gets 2 points. So this means that candidates with only one result are at an advantage but only just.”

The organisation added that the “next point grades fell into the O’ Level grades where each grade would have it equivalent point; A=6 marks, B=4 marks, C=3 marks, so the better the candidates’ grades, the better his or her chances of securing admission this year.

“The next point is the UTME scores where each score range has its equivalent point which can be summarised thus, 180-200=20-23 marks, 200-250=24-33 points, 251-300=34-43, 300-400=44-60 points,” JAMB explained.

Giving a breakdown, JAMB explained that each category would contain five JAMB results per point added.

For example a candidate with 180-185 gets 20 points, while a candidate with 186-190 gets 21 points.

JAMB added that the point system for direct entry would be released soon.

JAMB stated that fees would still be charged for screening which would replace the Post UTME test.

JAMB also emphasised that catchment and educationally less-developed state would still be used for admission into the nation’s tertiary institutions.

JAMB said, “Merit contains 45 per cent of the total candidates for a particular course, Catchment contains 35 per cent and ELDS and staff lists contains the rest. Cut off marks will be released by the institutions this year in the form of points and not marks.

“If a school declares its cut off mark for Medicine as 90 points and JAMB grants a candidate with 250 a provisional admission but his/her total points falls short of the 90 points, then he/she will lose the admission. So the provisional admission is just a means to an end, not the end in itself.

University Of Ilorin Lecturer Resigns After Audio Tape Of Him Sexually Harassing One Of His Student Leaks (Listen)

University Of Ilorin LecturerDr Mohammed Sani Idiagbon, pictured above, who was the Head of Department of the University of Ilorin, has reportedly resigned from office after an audio where he was asking for sexual favors from one of his students named Faith, leaked online.

According to Sahara Reporters, who leaked the audio last week, Faith is a 200 level student of his department who had gone to him regarding her score for a continuous assessment test he set for her class sometime ago.

In the audio, Dr Idiagbon could be heard telling Faith to allow him touch her breast.

Faith then told him that her breast is paining her because she was having her menstrual cycle.

She also told him that the office was not conducive for such act.

The lecturer then told Faith to lock the office door so they could have privacy which she did but still resisted his advances.

Angered by her reluctance, Dr. Idiagbon told her she is not the only one and so she should not feel so special and eventually told her to leave the office and not return.

Reacting to the incident, the University’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Kunle Akogun, confirmed the incident to Sahara Reporters, saying Dr. Idiagbon has resigned after he was suspended and removed as the head of the English department.

He also refused to honor an invitation of the Staff Disciplinary Committee, choosing instead to resign.

Akogun further stated that the university is investigating the matter and will ensure that the lecturer is duly punished if found guilty of the allegations against him. In his words,

“The university frowns against sexual harassment or any other harassment at that. The university is making necessary investigation and once we are done, the culprit will be brought to book.”

The sub-dean of school’s student affairs, Dr. Yussuf, said the case was reported to the Students’ Support Centre shortly after the Easter break in April.

Breaking: JAMB Cancels All 2016 UTME Exam Due To System Failure?

Information spreading round the internet has it that the Registrar to the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Examination Board (JAMB) has cancelled all Computer Based test (CBT) written so far in the ongoing Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) for admission into Universities, Polytechnics, Colleges and other Degree Awarding Institutions in Nigeria.
When contacted to elaborate on reason behind this rumour, the registrar speaks below on Channels TV. Video Below.

The agitations from candidates may have started yielding fruits as the House of Representatives has asked the Federal Ministry of Education to direct the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) to revert to pencil-paper method in the conduct of UTME or adopt both PPT and CBT so that candidates can opt for any one of their choice

. This followed a motion moved by a lawmaker from Lagos State, Mr. Oghene Emma-Egoh, on the “conflicting” scores of candidates who took the examination.

The law maker stressed that the technical errors experiences during the examination has invariably dashed the hopes of many of these candidates in gaining admission this year. The law maker further pointed to two cases of conflicting results.
One is that of Ibrahim Shawulu from Kogi State, who was said to have scored 399 out of 400, and in less than 24 hours his score was reduced to 199.”

Congrat: Reps order Jamb to revert to pencil-paper tests

Following irregularities recorded at the just concluded computer-based Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), the House of Representatives have directed the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) to return to the former pencil-paper method in conducting examinations for candidates seeking admission into tertiary institutions.

According to The Punch, the directive which was issued on Thursday, March 17 required that the Federal Ministry of Education prevailed on JAMB to revert to the former pencil-paper tests due to JAMB’s lack of capacity to handle the computer-based tests.

In the alternative, the House said JAMB could conduct computer-based tests and pencil-paper examinations simultaneously for candidates to opt for anyone of their choice.

Oghene Emma-Egoh, a lawmaker from Lagos state who moved the motion cited instances of technical flaws that marred the computer-based tests.

He said: “The House is worried that already, serious admission problem is rocking the nation because JAMB receives huge allocation from the Federal Government, they charge candidates all manner of fees and majority of the candidates do not gain admission because of the technical hitches of the CBT.” He cited instances of conflicting scores which was occasioned by technical flaws.

He said: “Foluke, the 17-year-old girl in Ejigbo-Lagos, scored an aggregate of 156 in the first result, while in the result that later came out, she had an aggregate of 196.”

Citing another instance, he said Ibrahim Shawulu from Kogi state who scored 399 out of 400, but in less than 24 hours another result surfaced reducing Shawulu’s score to 199.

Meanwhile, JAMB in response to complaints of irregularities in the computer based tests has noted that the worst CBT is far better than the best paper and pencil test (PPT), stating that“ the era of candidates pouring acid on staff, bolting with question papers into the bush and all manners of unthinkable embarrassing acts were gone”.

5 Types Of Students You Are Likely To Meet In Nigerian Schools

A school is an institution designed for the teaching of students (or “pupils”) under the direction of teachers. There are however different categories of students in a school.

4 types of students you are likely to met in school.

The back seaters: These class of students are known to everybody as the dull and the troublesome ones.

The ‘over sabis’: This ones are always quick to raise up their hands to answer questions even when they would eventually get the answer wrong.

The silent killers: The reserved ones who would not raise their hands up when questions are asked but would rather wait when no one is able to answer the question so that they can prove their scholastic skills.

The tricksters: The ones who would raise up their hands when questions are asked when in reality they do not have the answer to the question. The only reason they raise their hands is in a bid to evade the teacher from asking them the question.

Which were you???
